Well, the first thing that comes to mind is cutting the groove in the
capstrips. A standard blade is 1/8" wide. I wouldnt even know where to start
looking for a 1/16" blade or router bit.

Apart from that I dont see why it would'nt work. You could use a band clamp
to substitute for the nails.
