First I would like to say hey, WASSSUP!! I just now was able to hack past my
jobs firewall and get on here. Second if I was a little callous sounding in
my last post well, go figure. Now to the reason of this post. Having to
rebuild my newly acquired "flying" aircraft I have done some extensive
research in the area of wood protection use and covering. I have now
obtained some useful experience in this field as well. I was thumbing
through some archived posts and found some subjects left open that I would
like to comment on if I may. I can say that the use of two part epoxy
varnishes is a two fold benefit. First it seals the wood obviously and this
is only good if you are using wood with a moisture content at around 11-13%.
Remember that in sealing your wood that you are not only sealing out
moisture but sealing it in as well. Second the dope products will not break
down the varnish over time like what happened to me. (although I have spoken
with Tony Bengilis and I agree that he feels aircraft grade material were
not used in my aircraft) Tony is a great person and a wealth of information
(DUH) and my only regret is that I didn't meet him sooner. After our
discussion I plan to go back together using doug fir. Hand picked from a
lumber yard because you should inspect the wood that you get from any source
any way. Second I plan to seal all end grain with alum paste. After using a
moisture meter and controlling the environment of the shop to the enth
degree. I know I may be going over board but in twenty years when I have to
recover her she won't have to be rebuilt again. Thanks and any comments are
welcome.
