No real drawback, other than the time spent doing it.  You'll want to be
careful during the covering process so that the pattern doesn't show on
the fabric from the outside.  Normal tightening should be sufficient,
but I'd be careful not to get glue on the cut edge of the routed area.

Also, the "corners" of the routed-out area should have a generous radius
(say 3.4" or so) to prevent cracking.
