Is than the normal Continental starter? If so, you could save some 7-8
lbs by going to one of the newer flyweight starters (larmar or skytec?).

Have you investigated other choices for batteries than the convential Gill
or Concord? Some of the ultralight guys are using lighter (4.5 lbs or so)
batteries with apparently good results. Granted, they are usually turning
over smaller engines, but it might be something to look into. That and
one of the above starters cuts your weight penality in half. See
www.recreationalmobiity.com for some of info on these batteries.

Another option might be to bag the battery entirely and use a start cart
kind of thing that gets disconnected and left in the hangar after you got
it started. If you shutdown far from home, you would be stuck with hand
propping it. It would also make for a some dicey power to the various
accessories.

Just some (probably half-baked) ideas.
