Tony Bingelis addresses this very issue in _The Sportplane Builder_,
page 68.

"...It is generally accepted that nails contribute little if any
strength to a joint.  Actually, they do no useful work once the glue has
dried."

Bingelis actually goes on to say that nails have some use, basically as
very cheap clamps to allow you to move on an increase your production
speed.  "...By contrast, using the glue and permanent nailing method, no
clamps are needed and the rib may be removed immediately from the jig
and another inserted for quick uninterrupted production and increased
glue economy."
